Raw Vegan Detox Experiences From a Meat Eating Man (Guest Post)

This guest post comes to you from Carl.  I asked him to write a guest post for me about his experiences on a raw detox and this is what he had to say.

A couple of months ago the concept of a raw detox would have been completely foreign to me. I’ve never really worried about what I eat, which was a mistake on my part, considering the fact that I suffered from indigestion, heart burn and bloatedness constantly. So when Mel suggested a raw detox I was sceptical at first, to say the least, but considering the fact that I want to try to live a healthier lifestyle I was willing to give it a shot. It was a wonderful surprise to find out the difference a healthier diet can make and I’d recommend that everyone do it once a month.

We started our days of with a smoothie, which is great for me because I never have much of an appetite in the morning, so I like the fact that I can get all my nutrients in, with a delicious green smoothie. The smoothie left me feeling energized and refreshed, the fact that it’s a delicious way to start the morning is just an added bonus. I felt more awake instantly and ready to face the day and whenever I felt slightly peckish, I could just snack on some tasty cashews and sunflower seeds, which provided me with the satisfaction of snacking, without all the unhealthy added extras.

Our lunch for the first two days were a delicious raw wrap/cos salad taco. Now this was one of the most delicious meals I have had in my life, I couldn’t get enough of it. It was crispy and delicious and I instantly felt refreshed and felt a liveliness in my face, like my skin was happy for the healthiness of it, knowing it won’t have to suffer the consequences of my normal unhealthy meals I would use to eat.

Our dinner was a basil pesto pasta the first evening. I love this meal, because it is delicious and very filling, but it does not leave you feeling sluggish. You don’t get that lazy feeling, that one would normally associate with regular pasta.

To me the lunch and dinner had a longer sustained energy than what I would usually feel after a meal. My body did take a day to adjust to the detox, but by day two I was feeling great. I had no indigestion, no bloatedness and I was significantly less gassy.

On day two we had a raw lasagna for our second evening and this is honestly one of my favourite foods from now on. I could hardly finish it, but I didn’t feel like a fatty afterwards. It bursts with fresh flavours and is really scrumptious.

On the third day for lunch we had a macro bowl, which is a resembles a de-constructed salad, but I loved the option of eating the vegetables one by one or mixing them up for a taste explosion.

My conclusion for a raw detox is that everyone should do it every now and again. It cleanses the body and leaves you feeling refreshed and makes your skin feel amazing. I felt revitalized and more energized than I would in normal days. I won’t be able to do it all day everyday, but for anyone that wants to give their system a healthy holiday I would say do it and reap the rewards of feeling great. When you are done with the detox I would also suggest to maintain a healthy diet moderation is key. I’m sure all the recipes for the amazing meals I had will follow soon.

an instant of life captured for eternity

Life lately has been filled with trying something new, fun and cheap every weekend, this is a sure way to be a happy little camper and truly experience life.  This weekend we went to Scope X.  Its a telescope expo with lots of fun things to see and amazing talks to listen to.  However, I did not expect the location it was at to be the highlight of the whole day. The event was held at the museum of military history, they had all sort of interesting things to see.

This giant plane was right in the middle of the expo

How was your weekend?

an instant of life captured for eternity

On Saturday we decided to go to I ❤ Joburg.   It was a spur of the moment kind of a thing that was really lovely.  If you are wondering what this I ❤ Joburg thing is about, well its a 12 hour music event with lots and lots of acts like, fall  out boy, panic! at the disco, T pain, B.o.B and other bands.  I did realize one thing, getting seated tickets is the way of the future.  You can still see the entire stage, can go to the loo when you want, you can get beer easily and you don’t have to stand in the hot sun for hours.

This  was one of the best last minute plans we ever made all the bands and performers for wonderful.  Panic! at the disco, did the best cover of queen I’ve ever seen or heard.  It was the closest thing to seeing Freddie Mercury live I will ever get and it just made me a happy little girl.

The road not taken – Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Life sure can sneak up on you and happen when you least expect it.  Its beautiful and every moment should be lived like its your last.  This is a new year filled with wonderful opportunities.  Happy new years to all my lovely followers.  This year will hopefully be filled with more blogging.

DIY Christmas

I’m not a big Christmas fan, don’t get me wrong I love the whole idea of Christmas I just think the message has been lost.  Everywhere I look I see kids throwing tantrums in shopping centers  grumpy people shopping and people buying so much food they could feed an army.  Instead of people being grateful for what they have they buy more and more of things they don’t need and in some cases things they will never use. Its the season of endless waste (wrapping paper, serviettes  paper plates, food and living trees just getting thrown away after its served its “purpose”), but if all that isn’t enough to make me want to explode the thing that really makes my heart beat a little faster is the gluttony, I see it year after year all the eating, till you can’t eat anymore.  Its enough to drive me crazy, but I do love Christmas.  I love the decorations, giving to people in need ( most years I go for a drive and hand out food to the homeless), giving handmade gifts to family and friends (truffles, cookies and hummus), being able to spend time with family and most importantly, being thankful for the friend and family in my life, they are way more important than any gift I could possibly receive.

DIY CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS – because Christmas should be about love.

Pine cone centerpiece

This is so easy and looks so pretty.  Collect a couple of pine cones and place it in a pretty bowl, you can even spray paint it for a little more color.

Stick Christmas tree

This is my favorite thing. I just love how simple it looks.

Get a couple of twigs from your garden, place them in a little pot and decorate with a view Christmas decorations.

Pine Cone Christmas trees

Place the pine cone in a small pot and cut out a cardboard star to place on the top.  This is a sweet craft idea kids will love to help out with.

That’s just my top tree decoration ideas 🙂 let your imagination go crazy!  And remember try to have a waste free Christmas, use cloth napkins and don’t over do it!

Happy Holidays!

Why you should consider the Himalayan Bicycle Tour.

I know when people think about India they think about, pollution, overpopulation and people dying on the street ( yes that was a question my partner got asked when he came back from India, and for the record no one died), but really its a place that has the friendliest people always ready to help and some of the most spectacular scenery!  Here are some of the reasons why I’m going.

1) The challenge,  I’m looking forward to seeing if all my training has paid off, but even if you don’t want to cycle you can ride in the back up vehicle and see parts of the Himalayas no one does.

2) The food, almost everything is vegan friendly and the food looks just amazing and I cant wait to try a fresh authentic roti.

3) The people, some of the most beautiful and friendly people always ready to invite you into their homes and offer you a cup of tea.

4) The funny road signs, a very unique sense of humor, sure to make the trip worth while

5) The Buddhist temples, I love Buddhism so this is a big treat for me.

6) Festivals, the most amazingly vibrant festivals

7) Camping, I love camping and being in the fresh mountain hair is even better.

8) the donkeys, you get to visit a donkey sanctuary and sponsor a donkey.

9) You get to experience this amazing tour with people from all around the world

10) The prayer flags all over the place.

Next years tour is around August time for for info go to

White and Nerdy

This week off I’ve realized how different I am from other girls or for that matter people.  All through high school I always knew I was different, I was slightly awkward and only had guy friends, I just could never grasp the idea of looking good for men and acting all sexy like.  Yeah I was the kind of girl that made the sarcastic comments and cracked a joke to hide embarrassment.  Now that high school is long gone and I’ve made my real friends, I actually forget that I’m strange to other so called “normal” people. It feels like I live on a completely different planet!

How did this all start? Well it all started on Saturday, when we went for lunch with my boyfriends family.  Okay this all seems normal, but let me paint you a picture I’m pretty short and my boyfriends family is pretty tall and in comes his sister who looks like a super model shes tall skinny with beautiful hair, commercial like hair, dressed amazingly for just lunch at the beach, well this all seems like I’m insecure, but you know what we all become a little insecure when you feel like you look different! and believe me I’m happy with the way I look.

When we get to the beach my insecurities just reached new levels, everywhere there are girls in tiny bikinis wearing a bucket load of make up getting there tan on and me well lets just say I’m so white and pale that you can almost see my organs through my skin! We start looking for a place to eat and I’m starting to feel more and more like a nuisance   because we have to look for a place that’s  got vegan friendly options ( 1 hour search) and when I finally hear the mumbles under the breath, I just told them I’ll have a plate of fries. ( when in doubt you always have potatoes :/)

I think the reason I feel so uncomfortable with his sister is because I’ve been told by her friends that I’m weird and that I look funny and I’ve had numerous rude comments about being vegan, but I always bite my tongue because his family takes everything personally, but this was not the only incident that made me realize I’m different this week, we saw some of my boyfriends work friends randomly during the week and they seemed utterly horrified that we didn’t go out clubbing or have a bbq or anything like that, our holiday was spent watching monthy python, black books, star wars, cycling, walking everywhere, staying up late playing pc games and baking.  When I started quoting monthy python holy grail and none of his friends knew what the hell I was going on about I knew, wow wee I’m weird!

Well you know what I’m proud to be different, I don’t care about doing my hair for 5 hours or putting on my make up to go to the beach, I don’t care if I don’t listen to the in music! I love who I am in if that means I’m white and nerdy O well! All I can say to you is  “I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.” ( quote from monthy python).  I found this music video by weird al yankovic that describes how I’m feeling perfectly! I hope you enjoy it!
